Our "NYC-esque" Staycation

Okay, maybe describing it as NYC is being a little far-fetched, or maybe it's been way too long since we've had international travel, but nevertheless, it felt rather foreign doing a staycation on the "lower west side" of Melbourne CBD. Those who know Melbourne city know that most of the nicer hotels are on the east side of the CBD, but when W Melbourne opened and I got the Melbourne Travel Voucher, I thought it would be a good idea to break the routine of parenthood at the point, and do something different. Millie was only 7 weeks at the time. This is Millie's typical expression when outdoors. Our last international travel before COVID hit was in September 2019, and we were...

What is Make Room?

I started Make Room with the intention to grow creatively, to pick up new skills, and to make time to rest and be refreshed. I previously touched a little bit on how it began, but here’s the full story. Over the past few years when work would get really busy, I always wished I had more time to “breathe”, and the fact of the matter is I probably did - I just needed to be more intentional with how I spent my time, rather than letting the flow of things take me wherever it wanted to take me. Around May last year I thought it would be cool to start an Instagram account called Make Room. Really, I wasn’t sure...

Making my wife a monitor stand

Alicia has been working from home since March, and I wanted to make her something to help optimise her workspace just a bit more. This was back when we could still swing by Bunnings. I remember being in my early primary school days, I filled up a form saying that my ambition was to become a carpenter. Yup. Jesus might’ve had something to do with it. My teacher read the form and called me out in front of the whole class, asking “Wei Xiong, you want to be a carpenter?!” The whole class laughed. That might explain the shoddy woodwork exhibited here, but nevertheless, I had fun. And most importantly, it works!

Cancelled holiday plans

Today was supposed to be the day Alicia and I took off to Paris for our summer holiday around Europe. It was somewhat 5 years in the making, collecting frequent flyer points from every avenue possible, and finally blowing them all into one big trip. Fun fact: I was in the top 1% of Flybuys points collectors in 2019, not just in my suburb, but in Victoria, AND Australia 😂 Yup, I’m one of THOSE guys.Santorini Kamena Vourla Positano It was REALLY tough having to cancel all the bookings, but it’s best not to dwell in it. At the end of the day, it has put things in perspective, forcing us to focus on what’s important. We’re so thankful for...

Developing film at home

Learning how to develop film myself has always been something I wanted to do, so when the first lockdown was about to happen I thought it would be the perfect time to get everything I needed to finally learn it. It’s really so great to be alive in this age where we can learn everything off YouTube! This was the first roll I developed. I do it in my bathroom because it has everything I need in there, including running water and good ventilation. Developing black & white film is more commonly done at home, dealing with colour film is a whole other ballgame. I considered doing a short video to show how it’s done but realised it would be...
